Upgrade your ethical fashion skills

2 en 3 Maart 2010 vindt in London, in samenwerking met Northumbria University School of Design, het internationale congres ‘ Fast Forward’ over MVO/duurzaamheid in het modeonderwijs plaats. Het congres is de officiele afsluiting van het Europese Fashion Colleges project, in Nederland uitgevoerd onder de naam Fair Fashion: naar een eerlijke kledingindustrie door de Schone Kleren Campagne. Op het congres hebben docenten en studenten de mogelijkheid om papers en/of projecten te presenteren aan de deelnemers. Deze zullen later online of eventueel via meer formele weg worden gepubliceerd. (Engelstalige) voorstellen hiervoor kunnen, uiterlijk 30 oktober, per e-mail verzonden worden aan geertjan@schonekleren.nl – deadline voor het final paper/project is 30 januari 2010 – meer informatie hieronder.

Fashion both reflects and influences social change. In a time when we are increasingly concerned with the impact of the industry on people and the planet, students need to be equipped with the tools to design the way we make and consume fashion differently. Fashioning an Ethical Industry (an EU funded project taking place in the UK, Netherlands, Austria and Poland) is part of a growing global movement within fashion education that is addressing how the business of fashion impacts on garment workers.  This two day international conference will build upon the success of previous national events and the publication of the Sustainable Fashion: A Handbook for Educators[1]. It will bring together educators, industry experts, academics and selected students to explore how fashion can be taught to inspire responsibility for the rights of the workers making our clothes.

Alongside our set programme of speakers with expertise in the industry, we will provide the opportunity for the presentation of academic research papers and for students to present their project or dissertation work at the conference. Each paper will be presented in a 30 minute session. Double sessions of one hour are available. All of the papers and projects will be presented in a workshop setting and the presenter should allow time for participants to comment and contribute to the session.

Academic/Research Papers
Papers are welcomed that address the following or related themes:
·         Social responsibility in the garment industry (with an emphasis on garment workers’ rights)
·         Teaching ethics within fashion education
·         Approaches to education for sustainable development relevant to fashion education

Student Presentations
Students are invited to apply for the opportunity to showcase their project, design or dissertation work which addresses social responsibility in the garment industry. If you are a tutor please encourage your students to make a submission.

Procedure
Academics and students interested in participating in this event should submit an abstract by 30th October 2009 of 500-700 words to geertjan@fairfashion.org or liz@fashioninganethicalindustry.org

Academic and Research Papers: Abstracts should clearly identify: title, name of presenter(s); institution where appropriate; full contact details; the theme addressed, length of session required (30 minutes or 1 hour), the issue, development or problem addressed; the method of investigation; key findings and how these contribute to understanding the problem at hand in either a theoretical or empirical/practical way; and whether the papers has been previously published or presented elsewhere

Student Presentations: Abstracts should include: title, name of presenter(s); institution where appropriate; full contact details; length of session required (30 minutes or 1 hour); the nature of work (dissertation/design work/project etc); the theme addressed. Please submit visuals if appropriate.

Abstracts will be peer-reviewed by a committee chaired by Doug Miller Inditex/ITGLWF Professor in Ethical Fashion at University of Northumbria. Final papers should be 5-6000 words long. The papers will be published online on the Fashioning an Ethical Industry website under a creative commons licence and may be published more formally.

Fees and expenses
As a charitable organization, we are unable to guarantee travel and accommodation costs for those making presentations. If the speakers are from within Europe we may be able to explore the possibility of providing funding.  Please enquire: geertjan@fairfashion.org

Fair Fashion zal aanwezig zijn bij de lancering van een nieuw magazine: Mint. Mint is een internationaal fashion magazine dat in zijn geheel is bedacht, ontworpen en uitgevoerd door een groep van 26 3e-jaars studenten van het Amsterdam Fashion Institute. Het magazine schetst de persoonlijke verhalen en de relatie die mensen met hun kleding hebben door middel van fashion shoots, illustraties en anecdotes. Wars van trends richt het blad zich op het kleine: de emoties en herinneringen die in de kleding zijn meegeweven.

De launch party van Mint, dat samen met het AMFI jaarboek wordt verkocht, vind 1 juli plaats in Pakhuis de Zwijger, Amsterdam. Om 20:00 uur opent de Mint Closet met onder andere Do-it-yourself fashion, Mint bingo, en quirky workshops (punniken!). Het thema van het magazine past helemaal bij Fair Fashion. Daarom zullen ook wij in de Mint Closet aanwezig zijn met een workshop. Om 22:30 barst de feestelijke ode aan het magazine helemaal los met verschillende DJ’s.

Pret-a-porter, couture en arty designkleding met respect voor mens en milieu geven de catwalk in de Eusebiuskerk een duurzaam signatuur tijdens de Awearness Fair Fashion Show op zondag 28 juni.

Verschillende labels en ontwerpers tonen hun verrassende collectie aan de hand van de thema’s people – environment – innovation. De op de modeshow aansluitende catwalk talkshow wordt geleid door niemand minder dan Jort Kelder. Tijdens deze show gaan sleutelfiguren uit de duurzame kledingindustrie in dialoog met kledingretailers, fair fashiondeskundigen, politici en andere beleidsmakers over de thema’s people – environment – innovation in de mode. Het Fair Fashion team zal hier natuurlijk ook bij zijn.

Awearness Fair Guerillastore
Van 29 juni t/m 5 juli is de Awearness Fair Guerrillastore geopend aan de Turfstraat 1a in Arnhem. De tijdelijke winkel biedt onderdak aan hippe eerlijke mode, unieke tassen en andere accessoires van gerecyclede materialen. Jonge ontwerpers creëren ter plekke originele stukken van gedragen kleding. Diverse workshops van o.a. Loesje, de Schone Kleren Campagne en duurzame kooptips van de StoereVrouwen maken van een bezoek aan de store een informatief feestje.
