Naast de informatiestands op Station Blue – de expositieruimte met als thema jeans – was er ook een door Charlie + Mary ingerichte Supermarket waar studenten duurzame kleding konden kopen, en een Swapstore waar afgedankte denim, shirts of jurkjes geruild konden worden. Het thema van Beyond Green was dit jaar ‘The System of Fashion’ – “The cre­ation of a gar­ment is a com­plex pro­cess: an end­less­ly long chain of pro­cess­es which are often uneth­i­cal, in­ef­fi­cient or cause pol­lu­tion. It is there­fore im­por­tant to get more in­sight in­to the com­plex­i­ty of the man­u­fac­tur­ing pro­cess, so that we can iden­ti­fy op­por­tu­ni­ties to pro­duce in a more sus­tain­able way. If the fash­ion in­dus­try wants the man­u­fac­tur­ing pro­cess to be more sus­tain­able, it is im­por­tant to of­fer fash­ion stu­dents the knowl­edge they need to make it so. The stu­dents of to­day are the de­ci­sion mak­ers of to­mor­row.”

Hoewel het event vooral bedoeld was voor studenten en docenten in het modeonderwijs, kwamen er ook journalisten, medewerkers van kledingmerken en aankomende mode-ondernemers op af. De presentatie was in handen van musicalster en ambassadeur van de Schone Kleren Campagne Robin van den Akker (Op zoek naar Joseph/MAMMA MIA!). Naast het programma van sprekers en workshops werd ook het Fair Fashion magazine gepresenteerd, een eenmalige uitgave onder redactie van Miriam van Ommeren en Geert-Jan Davelaar van de Schone Kleren Campagne, met daarin onder andere studentenprojecten, informatie over de issues in de kledingindustrie, tips wat je als student en consument kunt doen voor eerlijke kleding, en columns van fashion-icoon Aynouk Tan en modejournaliste Lynsey Dubbeld.

Met presentaties en workshops door:

• Beauty Zibula, kledingarbeidster en vakbondsleider, werkt al jaren in de Zuid-Afrikaanse kledingindustrie. Zij vertelt over haar leven in de fabriek en hoe belangrijk het werk van vakbonden is om arbeidsomstandigheden te verbeteren
• Roosmarie Ruigrok, Textielmanager Max Havelaar: Fair Trade katoen
• Marian van Weert, Programmaspecialist katoen, ICCO: biologisch katoen
• Sofie Schop, Business Development Manager Fair Wear Foundation: hoe helpt FWF bedrijven om arbeidsomstandigheden in kledingfabrieken te verbeteren
• Charlie + Mary, een fair concept store in Amsterdam: hoe zet je een eigen duurzame modelijn en kledingwinkel op?
• Nicholas Hurenkamp, CSR Manager bij Zinvest (o.a. J.C. Rags, Dept, Men at Work)
• Sander Jongerius, productontwikkelaar bij KICI Kledinginzameling: recycling van kleding

Schone Kleren Campagne in the Netherlands is working with partner organisations in Austria (Sudwind Agentur), Poland (Polish Humanitarian Organisations) and the UK (Labour Behind the Label) in a European awareness project called ‘Fashioning an Ethical Industry’.

Aim of the project is to raise awareness about the poverty and workers rights of garment workers in Southern supplier countries. The project works with students and tutors on fashion related courses and has been running for three years in the Netherlands under the name of ‘Fair Fashion: naar een eerlijke kledingindustrie’.

The project aims to inspire students to raise standards for workers in the fashion industry of the future and support tutors of fashion related courses to incorporate social responsibility issues into their teaching.

This survey is part of the independent final evaluation of the project and will help the project organisations to learn from experiences of the project over the last three years as well as contributing to a final evaluation report for the European Commission.

Cradle 2 Cradle is een manier van ontwerpen waarbij er wordt gekeken naar de duurzaamheid in de levenscyclus van een product en daarna (wieg tot wieg) zonder kwaliteitsverlies of restproducten. Hoe dit concept kan worden toegepast op kleding en textiel wordt tijdens deze middag onderzocht met behulp van presentaties van experts en studenten die met C2C aan de slag zijn gegaan. ‘Tijdens Rietveld UncuT zal een ‘sweatshop’ worden nagebouwd. Een sweatshop is een productie-instelling waar tegen weinig kosten veel geproduceerd wordt, vaak onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden. Sweatshops komen vooral voor in ontwikkelingslanden en opkomende economieën zoals China en India. Studenten van de afdeling Mode zullen met ongeveer 25 naaimachines non stop werken aan de productie van tassen, die aan bezoekers worden uitgedeeld. Het geluid dat de ratelende naaimachines produceren zal ritmisch worden versterkt en zal voor een moderne symfonie op de achtergrond zorgen.‘

Studenten van de afdeling sieraad ontwerp gebruiken de backstage als alternatieve garderobe en de afdeling architectuur plegen architectonische interventies met het menselijk lichaam als instrument.

Het thema van dit jaar is ‘Good Design’. Er zijn o.a. presentaties van David Shah (trendwatcher), Kate Fletcher (Fashion for Sustainability) en Carolyn Strauss (Slow Fashion). Naast de presentaties is er ook een Beyond Green expo (Fair Fashion heeft daar natuurlijk ook een stand, dus kom langs!), kun je de ontwerpen van jonge designers bewonderen en is er een clothing swap. Op het Amsterdam Fashion Institute vindt er een hele Beyond Green week plaats. Fair Fashion geeft een interactieve workshop over Good Design, wat jij kunt doen voor eerlijke kleding, arbeidsomstandigheden in de kledingindustrie en goede initiatieven uit de industrie.

24hr Sweatshop (update)
Een groep van 44 studenten beleefde hoe het is om in een sweatshop te werken door mee te doen aan de sweatshop workshop: 24 uur lang werkten er twee ploegen studenten achter de naaimachine aan 500 tasjes. Hun harde werk kon je online volgen via een webstream en werd ook live uitgezonden door de Amsterdamse zender Salto 1.

Alongside our set programme of speakers with expertise in the industry, we will provide the opportunity for the presentation of academic research papers and for students to present their project or dissertation work at the conference. Each paper will be presented in a 30 minute session. Double sessions of one hour are available. All of the papers and projects will be presented in a workshop setting and the presenter should allow time for participants to comment and contribute to the session.

Academic/Research Papers
Papers are welcomed that address the following or related themes:
·         Social responsibility in the garment industry (with an emphasis on garment workers’ rights)
·         Teaching ethics within fashion education
·         Approaches to education for sustainable development relevant to fashion education

Student Presentations
Students are invited to apply for the opportunity to showcase their project, design or dissertation work which addresses social responsibility in the garment industry. If you are a tutor please encourage your students to make a submission.

Procedure
Academics and students interested in participating in this event should submit an abstract by 30th October 2009 of 500-700 words to geertjan@fairfashion.org or liz@fashioninganethicalindustry.org

Academic and Research Papers: Abstracts should clearly identify: title, name of presenter(s); institution where appropriate; full contact details; the theme addressed, length of session required (30 minutes or 1 hour), the issue, development or problem addressed; the method of investigation; key findings and how these contribute to understanding the problem at hand in either a theoretical or empirical/practical way; and whether the papers has been previously published or presented elsewhere

Student Presentations: Abstracts should include: title, name of presenter(s); institution where appropriate; full contact details; length of session required (30 minutes or 1 hour); the nature of work (dissertation/design work/project etc); the theme addressed. Please submit visuals if appropriate.

Abstracts will be peer-reviewed by a committee chaired by Doug Miller Inditex/ITGLWF Professor in Ethical Fashion at University of Northumbria. Final papers should be 5-6000 words long. The papers will be published online on the Fashioning an Ethical Industry website under a creative commons licence and may be published more formally.
